Post is read Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, Central Time. A letter that lands on Monday or Tuesday waits for Wednesday, and every letter gets a reply.

There is no switchboard behind the number. It rings on a desk, and when the desk is closed it records a message. Visitors are not turned away so much as unimaginable: the address is a single rented room, and the only thing in it is a table.

What gets answered first

1. 1. Something recorded wrong. A wrong count, a wrong street, a wrong claim about what stands there. Straight to the front, handled the same week, and printed as a correction with its date.
2. 2. Ground that has changed. A lot cleared, a building up, a fence gone, a ditch culverted. This is how the field book stays honest between walks.
3. 3. A block worth recording. Two things side by side that should not work and do.
4. 4. Reprinting a record. Usually yes, with attribution and a link. Ask.
5. 5. Anything else at all, worked through from the oldest letter forwards.

What the desk cannot help with

• Flights, fares, tickets and bookings. None of those are ours to touch. The look up hands a trip to a separate company, and only that company can change, cancel or refund anything that follows.
• Restaurants, hotels and sights. Wrong publication, and plenty of others do it properly.
• Asking for a block to appear because you own something on it. Nothing here is purchasable, and asking is the most reliable way to keep a block out of the diary.

No call from this desk will ever ask for money, a card number or an account of any kind. There is nothing on this site that could give anybody a reason to ask.
